Astronaut sues pop singer Dido

by Edward Bovingdon in Behind The Music

An American astronaut is suing pop singer Dido after he spotted himself on the front cover of her last album.

Bruce McCandless II claims the image of him during a spacewalk in 1984 has been misappropriated on the cover of 2008's 'Safe Trip Home' and has filed a lawsuit. Sony Music and Getty Images are also named as defendants.

McCandless cannot claim copyright infringement as he does not own the rights to the photograph, but instead he believes that his ‘person' was used without permission.

The front cover contains a image of an astronaut in outer space, and although fairly small, McCandless maintains that he is definitely identifiable. He was the first person to "accomplish untethered free flight" in space with the aid of a jet-propelled pack.

The astronaut has licensed his persona to advertising and media campaigns before, and therefore claims the use of his image without permission has devalued his value. 'Safe Trip Home ' was one of 2008's biggest albums.
