Akosa, et all ‘vindicated’ by latest outcome of GT sale probe

The group of five prominent Ghanaians that sued government over the divestiture of Ghana Telecom is happy at latest revelations confirming its claims the transaction was not properly conducted.

Sources at the seat of government have told Joy News the committee reviewing the Vodafone deal has questioned former president Kufuor’s direct involvement in the transaction.

He is likely to be invited to answer questions about his direct dealings with officials of Vodafone when his administration sold 70% stake to the new operators.

Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Lawyer Bright Akwetey, Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosa and two others have been in court seeking a reversal of the sale.

They feel vindicated even before President Mills takes action on the review committee’s report.

Prof. Akosa tells Joy Mews he his colleagues can’t wait to have their day in court.

Meanwhile Mr Frank Agyekum, spokesperson for the former president, tells Joy News Mr. Kufuor will officially respond to the review committee’s comments about his alleged deals in the divestiture process later today.

We would walk with our Nkrumaists siblings to the negotiation table

February 04, 2010

Sunyani B/A), Feb 3, GNA- Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, National Chairman, People National Convention (PNC) on Wednesday said the party would not boycott plans by the Nkrumaists to get to the negotiation table again on the unification talks"

"What we say is that we are not happy about that way the regional executive of the Convention People's Party (CPP) in Brong Ahafo(B/A) are going about the unification process. They have join with our (PNC) regional executives in Brong Ahafo in the bid to start the unity talk process, without first hitting the CPP national executives", he stated.

These attitudes derail plans for uniting the Nkrumist front and make the chances of coming together difficult, he observed.

Speaking in an interview with GNA in Sunyani, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan stated that though, he had been informed by the Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the PNC, of the party engagement in talks with CPP in the region, he (Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan) had asked the regional executives of PNC to disassociate itself from the CPP.

"This is because the B/A regional executives of CPP have failed to inform the national executives of such an idea. I deem this a rehabilitation which no one must support. How can we(PNC) side with them when they have no regard for authority and have not made their plans known to CPP executives at the national level", he further said.

Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan noted: "This action and attitude spiting, coercing and stampeding the national executives into the unity process is not the right thing to do" and ask that things be done rightly.

He announced that the PNC is likely to go to national congress by 2011 and major activities to be undertaken by the party would be decided and made public later.

Snake bites on the increase in Wa East District

Funsi, UWR, Oct. 21, GNA - The frequency of snake bites has increased in the Wa East District, raising serious concerns among rural farmers in the area.

The period between the rainy and harmattan seasons in this part of the region brings about increases in the snake population and farmers are always at risk of their attacks when harvesting their crops and also travelling on foot at night.

Madam Fati Bapene, who recently had her buttocks bitten by an irritated snake while she was attending to nature's call in the bush blamed the Wa East District Assembly for not providing toilets to keep the people safe from snake bites.

Narrating her ordeal to the GNA at Funsi, she said she had a running stomach and went into the bush to "free herself".

While undressing, she unknowingly stepped on a snake which struck when she was naked and squatting.

Funsi, the district capital has a population of about 7000 and has only one pit latrine that serves the sanitary needs of 1000 people while the remaining 6000 people resort to "free range".

An average of four to five people are bitten by snakes daily around their places of residence where they normally "free range" because of inadequate toilet facilities.

Mr. Tongu Togdia, a farmer who was bitten by a snake last week, told the GNA that he and many other victims could not go to the health centre for medical treatment for lack of health insurance coverage and had to be treated locally.
