Driver's mate jailed for complaining of lost money
Kumasi, Oct. 14, GNA - An attempt by a driver's mate to get back his stolen money from the room of his parents at Asuofua near Barekese, in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of Ashanti, has landed him in prison.
Yaw Nsowah, a 20-year-old JHS graduate has kept his savings from his job as a driver's mate in the room, with the hope of using it to collect his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) result slip, in order to seek admission at the Senior High School to continue his education.
To the surprise of Nsowah, his GHC60 he hid in the room, where he, together with the mother, siblings and step-father, one Yaw Amo, sleeps.
In an attempt to get the lost money back, Nsowah threatened to kill the mother and the step-father with a knife and this has landed him a three-year jail sentence in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Police Chief Inspector Mary Nana Adwoa Affanyi, prosecuting, told the Court, presided over by Mr Justice William Boampong that, the complainant, Madam Ruth Boakye, is a farmer and together with the family live at Asuofua.
On October, 12, 2010, at about 13:00 hours, Nsowah inquired from the mother whether the money was with her.
This degenerated into verbal exchanges resulting in a quarrel between mother and son.
In the process Nsowah pulled a knife and threatened to kill the mother and the step-father, who was present at the time.
The step-father in a struggle with the convict managed to snatch the knife from him.
A report was made to the police and Nsowah, who also reported himself to the police, was arrested and detained for investigation.
He admitted the offence during interrogation and he was processed and put before the Court.
Yaw Nsowah, who looks younger than his age, pleaded guilty to the offence but told the Court that his action was to compel the parents, whom he suspected had taken the money, to give it back, to enable him to collect his BECE results slip, which has been with the headmaster of his former school for several months, due his inability to get money to pay for it.
The mother pleaded with the Court to convict her son for his continuous threats to kill his step-siblings and step-father.
The judge, passing the sentence, said he considered the fact that Nsowah had been jailed three months by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for the same offence.
