The Ministry of Education has abrogated the contracts of six construction firms working on the upgrading of some senior high schools in various parts of the country.
This is due to delays in the execution of the contracts which were awarded in 2006 and shoddy works done by the firms.
Education Minister, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who made this known during a tour of three senior high schools being upgraded with funds from the African Development Bank (AfDB), said “all those who carried out shoddy works have had their contracts terminated”.
The schools which are part of 22 other schools being upgraded are the Tema Senior High School, Ada Senior High School and the Manya Krobo Senior High School.
At the Tema Senior High School, all the new projects — administration block, computer block, visual arts block and a washrooms— have been completed and handed over.
Rehabilitation works were carried out on a four-unit classroom block, a three-storey classroom block and a science block. The fittings for the science block are, however, outstanding.
At the Ada Senior High School, a 12-unit classroom block, a computer block, a home economics block and washrooms have been completed and handed over.
Rehabilitation works carried out on the administration, classroom and science blocks have been completed.
At the Manya Krobo Senior High School, works on a six-unit classroom block, a home economics block and an administration block are yet to completed. Rehabilitation works on the visual arts , classroom and the science blocks are yet to commence.
Mrs Mould-Iddrisu said although she was satisfied with the work so far completed, there were still a lot more to be done in the schools.
She commended the AfDB for the support to upgrade the schools, and appealed to other development partners to assist at the basic school level where most of the schools needed rehabilitation.
The Project Architect at the Ministry of Education, Mr Arnold Nii Tackie, said 25 projects were designed in 2004 and made active in 2006, following a request from the government.
