REDEEMER AID INTERNATIONAL, GHANA
BACKGROUND AND ACTIVITIES
One obvious truth about the African continent is that even in the twenty-first century, Africa seems to have no say in the affairs of the world. It is thus not untrue that virtually all aspects of life in Africa: economic, political, social and technological, are masterminded by persons other than Africans. And also decades after political independence, it is still glaringly clear that we have still not been able to wean ourselves completely from the strings of colonialisms. And more pathetically is the fact that till date, we are still struggling painstakingly to overcome the legacies of underdevelopment, characterized by poverty, illiteracy, poor sanitation and squalid living conditions, political instability, high infant and mortality rate and malnutrition. Added to these is also the fact that corruption, unnecessary politicization of relevant issues, nepotism and pilfering have also provided the solid foundation for Africa to be gripped firmly in its challenges. So in effect, we can say that while Africa is not making any steady progress to development, the continent seems to be retrogressing at a faster pace.
The conditions of Africa have given much concern to the world. And consequently, lots of conventions have been passed with the aim of helping Africans to come out of their development challenges. One such convention is the Millennium Development Goals, which is designed to turn the fortunes of the world, particularly Africa for the better by 2015. Indeed, Ghana is a signatory to the convention. But as to whether, we will be able to achieve the goals of the MDGs is yet another issue. This is simply because the current trend of affairs seems to defy all hopes of a developed Ghana. In an attempt to promote collective responsibility towards the development of Ghana, the government has challenged non-governmental organizations to be up and doing to support government in its objective of making life better for people in the country. It is this direction that has propelled the formation of numerous NGOs across the length and breadth of the country.
Redeemer Aid International, Ghana, is one of the NGOs that has heeded to the call to assist government to find answers to the many daunting challenges facing the country. Redeemer Aid International is an internationally registered NGO with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. The NGO is determined to make all persons, regardless of race, religion and political lineage, to achieve their aims and objectives in life. The NGO equally has a resolution to enable all persons to enjoy the fundamental basic rights of human existence. That is, the NGO is deeply committed to making it possible for people to enjoy the fundamental human rights including: the right to happiness, liberty and property. In this direction, apart from the many charitable activities that the NGO undertakes, the NGO has taken it upon itself to run training programmes for persons in and outside its area of operation.
Thus, considering the overwhelming importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in socio-economic and political development, the NGO is running a programme in ICT for whoever is prepared to learn. Courses that are taught in ICT include the following:
- Basic knowledge in ICT
- Hardware
- Networking and
- Graphic Designing
Apart from the training in Basic computing, candidates are awarded with a diploma certificate after the completion of their training.
Currently, we are registering candidates who have basic skills in reading and writing to study health related programmes, including the following:
- Medicine Counter Assistance
- Health Care Assistance and
- Nursing
What is more, to combat illiteracy, we also organize intensive adult literacy class for all categories of people in the country, who would want to learn the art of reading and writing.
Our aim in organizing these programmes is basically to equip persons as a way of building a strong human resource base that will contribute meaningfully to the development of Africa, particularly Ghana, to overcome its many challenges. We are also convinced that as we acquaint persons with employable skills, social vices, such as child prostitution, armed robbery and internet fraud, locally known as Sakawa, to mention, but a few, will be significantly reduced, if not totally stopped.
Even though, a young NGO in the country, we have established branches in Sowutuom, Adenta, Nima and Maamobi. And we have trained a lot of people who are presently working in reputable institutions in the country. Redeemer has competent resource persons who are extremely motivated to assist in the training in the above mentioned programmes. At the moment we have succeeded in registering about five hundred candidates who are pursuing different programmes of study in our establishment.
